Indigenous Language Classes
At Café Puente, in addition to valuing Spanish, we also value the important indigenous languages of Latin America. We know that indigenous languages are at risk of being lost, and it is an act of resistance to continue speaking and teaching them.
In Latin America, Spanish is the dominant language, like English here in the U.S. Many indigenous people have had to fight to preserve not only their language but also their culture in general.
We are very proud to have an incredible teacher, María Salinas, who teaches the Chatino language that comes from the south of Oaxaca, Mexico. A leader in her Chatino community, María is passionate about language justice and sees teaching Chatino at Café Puente as an opportunity to rescue her language for her family and the rest of the community.
The Chatino classes are offered every Tuesday from 4:30-5:30pm. Visit our events calendar to see upcoming dates.
In 2024, we anticipate offering more indigenous language classes. If there is a language you would like to learn or if you are an indigenous person who would like to teach your language, please let us know.
